Since humans are very sensitive to the humidity of the air, most would like to know how much water vapor is being carried in the ambient air. The higher the humidity, the hotter we feel. The humidity also affects things like fog and rain. It is an important weather characteristic that affects not only humans but metals, plants and insects, to name a few.
One wouldn't normally think of a compass as a weather instrument but it certainly is one. Atmospheric conditions are constantly changing and moving. In order for a weather forecaster to determine if a particular weather condition will affect certain areas, he or she must know which direction the pattern is moving. While all of these instruments are used by the professional meteorologist, they are also available to the layman weather forecaster.
